Columbia United Methodist Church, located in West Columbia, is a medium-sized church with a vibrant and growing ministry. Realizing that an active endowment program could provide the means to further enhance its ministry, the pastor and church leaders contacted Heartspring Methodist Foundation seeking assistance.
Heartspring’s C.J. Taylor and Betty Millard visited church leadership on multiple occasions to evaluate their needs and help craft a strategy. With this input, the Heartspring staff worked with the church to develop a long-term plan to establish and promote an endowment fund.
The congregation’s interest in planned giving and charitable estate planning has increased significantly over the last two years, leading to growth of the church’s master endowment fund. Columbia UMC’s consistent plan to emphasize endowment support also has led to the establishment of three additional endowment funds and growth in stewardship awareness.
Building on this success, the church decided to conduct a six-week program further emphasizing stewardship. Each week a brochure, provided by Heartspring, was inserted into the worship bulletin covering such topics as Gift Annuities, Estate Planning, Charitable IRA Rollovers, Legacy Planning and Stewardship.
“The brochures look great and have been well received by the congregation,” said Joyce Rankin, chair of the endowment committee. “They raised awareness of stewardship and endowment and the program has led to a new planned gift by one of our members already.”
