Happy Birthday Heartspring – 35 years of service!

Heartspring is proud to celebrate 35 years of providing financial and stewardship services to you: the churches, agencies and individual Methodists of the Texas Conference, and pursuing our mission of helping your ministry succeed.

It all started back in 1978, with a motion by then-Chancellor Ewing Werlein (now retired Federal Judge Werlein) during the Texas Annual Conference’s morning session to establish a foundation to serve the financial needs of the conference. Our by-laws and the initial board of trustees and advisory trustees were approved at that time, and on June 17, 1978, the state of Texas approved our articles of incorporation as a not-for-profit charitable corporation.

Originally called the United Methodist Foundation of the Texas Annual Conference, the late Dr. Roy Felder was the first president, serving for 10 years. Several founding fathers are still actively involved today, including Don McGregor, current ex-officio board member[MM1] . The Foundation has continued to grow and expand services to the Texas Conference over the years. In 2007 the Foundation determined that to differentiate ourselves from competitors and similarly-named organizations, we should change our name. On January 22, 2009, our board of trustees voted to change our name to Heartspring Methodist Foundation, and we officially launched the new name May 6, 2009.

We are proud to celebrate 35 years of faithful service, helping your ministry succeed. Although our accounting system, staff and assets under management have grown dramatically over the years, the core mission of the Foundation remains unchanged. In his report in the 1978 TAC Journal Rev. Felder speaks of our original purpose to “receive gifts, legacies and bequests, and to administer the same for the benefit of the churches agencies and institutions of the Annual Conference.”

At the end of the first year of operation the Foundation consisted of one staff member and $1.4 million under management. Today, the Foundation has grown to 7 full-time staff members, and $80 million under management. From a modest beginning, our Foundation has grown into a ministry that now distributes more than $1 million a year to the churches, ministries and missions with in the Texas Annual Conference.
